X-clusive: Keane On New Wireless Festival

Xfm caught up with Keane minutes before they played their storming Xfm Live Session last night, and the band chatted about their new material and headlining the newly launched Wireless Festival in Hyde Park.

Speaking about the upcoming event, which will see the band headlining in front on 30,000 people, frontman Tom Chaplin explained that, despite their chart topping status, they still get nervous.

“I think anytime you’re playing to that kind of number of people it’s quite daunting, quite nerve-wracking,” he explained, “I think we’ve got  more used to playing gigs that are 'lower level' but that kind of thing will be a real buzz for us. It should be fantastic.”

Fans can also expect Keane’s performance to include the live debut of some of their highly anticipated new songs – which seem to have been inspired by a blend of the band’s new experiences as popstars and their essence as “three geeks”.

“We've got a couple of new things and we're in the studio sort of on and off over the next few months so we're really excited about the chance to try new stuff out on people.” Chaplin continued, “I think it's quite a sort of old fashioned way of doing things, you know, where you sort of ‘gig songs up’ and see what the reaction is. So, yeah we will have some new stuff.

“Obviously our sort of day to day existence has changed radically over the last few months. But at the same time we’re still just sort of three geeks, and three friends, just trying to sort of make our way through the world. We’ve probably got a lot of the same issues and a lot of new pre-occupations as well, so hopefully we’ll, well I know we’ve got a lot of stuff we want to try and get into the new songs.”

The band debuted one of their new songs ‘Hamburg Song’ during an amazing set in front of a capacity audience at the Islington Academy at their Xfm Live Session at the Islington Academy last night (March 8).

Apart from the new song (which the audience sang along with, prompting Chaplin to say “I can’t believe you know all the words, this songs not even fucking out yet. That’s the internet for you.”) the band also performed a special encore of ‘Bedshaped’ which was filmed for broadcast on Comic Relief night – with the band unfurling a huge Comic Relief banner and letting off a huge cannon full of red glitter over the crowd.

The full set list was:

  • ‘Can’t Stop Now’
  • ‘Everybody’s Changing’
  • ‘Sunshine’
  • ‘Bend And Break’
  • ‘Nothing In Your Way’
  • ‘Hamburg Song’
  • ‘We Might As Well Be Strangers’
  • ‘Your Eyes Open’
  • ‘She Has No Time’
  • ‘Somewhere Only We Know’
  • ‘This Is The Last Time’
  • ‘Bedshaped’
