X-clusive: Jet “We’re The Brits Underdogs”

As part of our Brit Awards special, Jet guitarist Cameron Muncey spoke exclusively to Xfm Online about being nominated at the biggest award ceremony in the UK music industry calendar and explained that, while the new record may have a country edge, they’re “Still a rock ‘n’ roll band.”
It’s been quite a year for Australia’s biggest rock ‘n’ roll export, Jet. With the album ‘Get Born’ selling by the truckload across the world, the band have spent 2004 with their collective foot firmly on the monitor and earned themselves a nomination for Best International Breakthrough Act.
“[Being nominated is] really good,” the guitarist explained. “But I don’t think musicians do this for awards, it’s more the icing on the cake. People just start going ‘Oh you’ve been doing really well’ and want to give you awards.”
However, at the Brits, Jet will be battling Scissor Sisters, Kanye West, The Killers and Maroon 5 for the award so, consequently, Muncey isn’t preparing his acceptance speech just yet.
“I don’t really rate our chances, but we’re pretty happy to be nominated,” he divulged. “I mean, Scissor Sisters are huge in Australia and in the UK. We have an alright chance, but we’re definitely the underdogs.
“It may just be me at the ceremony as I’m kicking around London at the moment, so I may have to be four times as badly behaved at the party to make up for other boys. I’ll be rooting for us to win.”
Following the success of their debut album, Muncey explained that the band are currently writing tracks for their sophomore effort and addressed reports that the band’s sound had taken a more country edge.
“We’re recording in March in a little studio in New York state,” he said. “We recorded some demos in Barbados recently, but we’ll be getting our heads down in the next couple of weeks as well.
“After touring America for so long, I think some of the ballads have definitely picked up a little of that Gram Parsons, Wilco country sound. It’s always good to try something new to keep you interested, but we’re definitely still a rock ‘n’ roll band. I’m sure the record will be out and we’ll be back on tour in the UK by the end of 2005.”
