X-clusive: Idlewild "We Made Mistakes Before"

Idlewild frontman Roddy Woomble has been speaking exclusively to Xfm Online about his band’s new single, their forthcoming album and why it may just improve your life…

Returning with the lead single from their new album 'Warnings / Promises' , Idlewild release ‘Love Steals Us From Loneliness’ this week and as Woomble explains, it’s not quite as melancholic as it may appear.

“The concept of the whole record is that we live our lives in the hall of other people’s,” he begins, “And for that moment you’re living part of their life. ‘Love Steals Us From Loneliness’ is about needing that one thing in order to understand the other. It’s sometimes seen as more romantic to be lonely than in love, but the two need each other to exist.

“The track is a narrative about someone falling in love with their own misery, but really it’s a sing-a-long fun song! I mean, there’s the 'Happy Birthday' line in there which is quite playful.”

Their first album to feature the talents of new bassist Gavin Fox and long-time live guitarist Allan Stewart, the record is the sound of the band approaching their ten year anniversary  - not that this is a bad thing, Woomble insists.

“We’ve gone from a punk band, to a soulful rock band, I guess,” he explains. “While some of the bands after us have become huge and some have fallen by the wayside, we operate at our own pace and that’s really satisfying. We’re always developing as a group and I try to keep developing as a person as well.

“Our older albums are like road-maps, they tell you where to go next,” he continues. “We made mistakes before, but we know what to do now, and if you’re writing songs that are essentially a description of yourself, a little self-awareness goes a long way.”

With so many guitar bands having so much success at the moment, Woomble has little doubt that his band still have much to offer. In fact, they may just change your life.

“To be crass about it, I hope that ‘Warnings / Promises’ sells a million copies,” he insists. “But it deserves to be heard by people that like music. If you like Jamelia and Lemar you probably won’t get much out of it, but for everyone else it will fit right into their lives… And may just improve it.”

The single ‘Love Steals Us From Loneliness’ is released this week (February 21) while the album ‘Warnings / Promises’ is released on March 7 through Parlophone.
