X-clusive: Green Day To Start Work On New Album

Punk pop godfathers Green Day recently premiered their new live DVD ‘Bullet In A Bible’ in London, and Xfm’s drivetime host Lucio went along to catch up with the trio and find out their plans for 2006.
Following the surprise achievement of the band’s ‘American Idiot’ opus, 2005 has been the most successful twelve months of Green Day’s 17 year–long career to date.
From humble beginnings in Berkeley, California in 1988, the trio’s seventh album won them both critical acclaim and a whole new generation of fans. But it’s not as if the band are rushing headlong into a disappointing follow-up, as frontman Billie-Joe Armstrong explains,
“We’re gonna take our time,” the diminutive singer revealed. “We’ll probably start writing after the first of the year and then just regroup. We’ve gotta take our time – this year was such a big year for us.
“I think it’s a good time to regroup and have good substance to write about instead of hopping into something really fast.”
The band are also still talking up the possibility of a full-length movie version of their ‘American Idiot’ LP, although the chances of them appearing in the flick seems remote,
“We’re gonna make a movie going along the story of ‘American Idiot’,” drummer Tre Cool explained, “A rock opera. We need to go home, put some thought into it, talk to directors and writers and get the script together, stuff like that.
“I don’t think that I’m going to have to [be in the film], because we’re making the movie and I wouldn’t do that to myself.”
“I’m not an actor at all,” Armstrong continued. “I’d rather be behind the writing and the production, and leave the acting to the actors.”
The band also spoke about how they dealt with the initial criticism after moving away from the Californian underground scene to worldwide acclaim.
“We were so busy concentrating on living our lives and touring and working and growing into who we are as a band,” bass player Mike Dirnt concluded.
“You’ve gotta put the blinders on sometimes and go forward and say ‘To hell with what anyone says’. You’ve just got to move forward and I think, at the end of the day, I’m glad we’re here.”
The single ‘Jesus Of Suburbia’ is released next week (November 14) while the gazillion-selling album ‘American Idiot’ is out now.
