X-clusive: Green Day “Ambitious Or Crazy”

Prior to their explosive Brits performance of ‘American Idiot’, punk-pop godfathers Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool of Green Day have been speaking exclusively to Xfm about how 'American Idiot' could've ended their careers.
Following a clutch of incredibly well-received London gigs, Green Day made a much-anticipated appearance at Earls Court for the Brit Awards and told Xfm why releasing an album as ambitious as ‘American Idiot’ could have ended their careers for good.
“We knew it would either gonna be monumental or career suicide,” bassist Mike Dirnt explained. “But we believed in the album so we put it out there, put our huevos on the chopping block and it turned out good,” drummer Tre Cool continued.
“Every band’s got doubts,” singer and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong added, “You never know. Especially with an album like ‘American Idiot’, when you put your opinion on the line and you come up with something that sort of has a storyline and a strong concept. Most people just don’t have that kind of ambition. Either we were ambitious or crazy, but either way we’re pretty happy with how it's going.”
And when asked how much they valued their nomination, the pair were in little doubt that winning awards is not something to be sniffed at.
“Winning is good,” Cool confirmed before deadpanning, “But the real winners are the UK fans – because they have us, Green Day!”
The band recently announced they will play another show at the 60,000 capacity Milton Keynes Bowl on June 19 after the night on June 18 sold out. Tickets for the Milton Keynes date are on sale now.
