X-clusive: Gorillaz Prepare For Opera House Gigs
With the opening first night just hours away, Gorillaz have confirmed more live collaborators for this week’s ground-breaking live shows at the Manchester Opera House. From Shaun Ryder to De La Soul it seems Damon may potentially have the gig of the year on his hands…
The Manchester International Festival (for it is they that are hosting the five night run) has announced that album guests Ike Turner, Neneh Cherry, Martina Topley Bird and Bootie Brown are the latest special guests to be confirmed for Gorillaz: Demon Days Live.
They’ll join previously announced guests Shaun Ryder, De La Soul and Roots Manuva to play tracks from Gorillaz’ second album ‘Demon Days’ at the sell-out, one-off concerts at Manchester Opera House beginning tonight (November 1).
Speaking to Xfm, Gorillaz mainman Damon Albarn commented that “I think on the Saturday we’ve got everyone except MF Doom,” indicating that – due to the complexity of getting everyone in the same place at the same time – the special guest line-up may vary as the run progresses.
“But it’s not totally organised,” he continued, “And in terms of how it’ll look – you’ll just have to wait and see.”
Alex Poots, the Festival Director of Manchester International Festival commented, “It's great for Manchester International Festival to be welcoming such an array of world class artists for these unique world premiere shows.”
The stage show is also expected to feature contributions from a gospel choir, a childrens choir the 7-piece Gorillaz ‘band’ (including Albarn – though he maintains the band will remain hidden) and the presence of one Mr. Dennis Hopper is yet to be denied.
