X-clusive: Bloc Party New Album Already Underway

added 13 July 2005 at 12.23

As Bloc Party ready the release of their next single ‘Pioneers’, guitarist Russell Lissack has revealed the band have already started work recording the follow-up to their debut album ‘Silent Alarm’.

Speaking to Xfm, Lissack explained that the band have been working at Jacobs Studios in Farnham, Surrey with ‘Silent Alarm’ producer Paul Epworth, and that there’s no shortage of new songs to chose from.

“There’s a lot of new material at the moment,” he explained, “The last few tours we’ve been trying to write stuff every day in soundchecks so we’ve got a lot of new things on the go, at least 25 songs.

“I like all the new songs better than any of the old because I
think they’re all better. We’ve been playing a couple live like ‘Into The Blue’, one called ‘Kids’ and one called ‘The Present’ but I don’t know when they’ll see the light of day. I can’t say too much though because they’re still in tentative early stages.

“It’s strange for us because the album’s very old in our eyes. I mean even before it was out we were writing a lot of new stuff, so it helps us to get new things out.”

Lissack did however confirm that fans can expect a brand new single sometime before the end of the year, and explained the band are intending to make the new album an altogether more ambitious affair.

“We went into the studio last week, just for a week, to record a new single for October.” He continued, “We’ve recorded two [possible] songs but we still need to mix them and finish them, so we’re not sure which one’s going to be the single just yet. One’s called ‘Hero’ and one’s called ‘Two More Years’. And then we’re going to try and pop into the studio for another week or two throughout the year to try and get more songs done.

“We did those with Paul Epworth again, but we’re gonna be working with different people throughout the year. For us, we feel like we’ve learnt a lot in the last year and he’s the only person we’ve ever worked with, so we think we should try other people as well.

“It [the new album] is gonna be bigger and better, to not use any good adjectives. It’s hard to say because things sound differently from when we’re just working on them on stage to how they sound when they’re finally recorded. The first album were young ideas and hopefully this is going to be bigger, more developed ideas.”

Bloc Party’s next single ‘Pioneers’ is out on Monday July 18.
