The Pipettes

Drawing on everything from Doo Wop to Riot Grrl, The Pipettes cost their spiky riffs and ascerbic lyrics with sugar-sweet girlie harmonies and soothing melodies. Hear them in session.
The Pipettes 'Xfm Session' [Dial-Up] [Broadband]
An all-girl three piece from Brighton, The Pipettes combine a post feminist agenda with doo wop, pop, punk and polka dot dresses.
Picture Courtney Love on roller skates and you're halfway there.
Session opener 'Why Did You Stay?' [Dial-Up] [Broadband] sounds like a '50s wail to a lost love but, on closer examination, turns out to be a viciously pretty put-down of a pliant ex-lover. This kind of conflicting style and substance is something you need to get used to if you're going to hang with The Pipettes for very long.
'It's Not Love' [Dial-Up] [Broadband] is up next; all hand-claps, whirligig piano and breathtakingly slick vocal harmonies - The Pipettes being vocal experts in much the same way that hired assassins are good with knives. It is, perhaps unsurprisingly, all about dirty, meaningless shagging.
Elsewhere, 'Tell Me What You Want' [Dial-Up] [Broadband] is a glossy mouthed come-on thinly-disguised as a plea for a good, wholesome man while session closer 'We Are The Pipettes' [Dial-Up] [Broadband] transposes 'We Are The Clash' for girls who know that even aliens fancy them. The best girl group since The Bangles.
