The Killers To Perform Alongside Mariah Carey

added 03 August 2005 at 17.38

Awards ceremonies do funny things to bands, and there's not much stranger than the pairing of Mariah Carey and The Killers at this year's MTV Video Music Awards Ceremony.

Mariah Carey And The Killers have been announced as headliners at this years event and will join a list of other music heavy-weights already announced, including Green Day, Kanye West and (the not quite so heavy) Kelly Clarkson, to perform at the ceremony.

President of MTV, Christina Norman, chose to focus on the similarities, rather than differences, in the two acts when making the announcement.

"Mariah and The Killers have both had amazing years - taken together they have sold more than 8 million albums, set up camp on the Billboard charts, and spawned numerous hit singles"

"We are working closely with Mariah and The Killers to present two of the most sensational show-stopping performances for this year's VMAs."

Carey's R'n'B lament 'We Belong Together' has been nominated in the Best Female Video and Best R&B Video categories, while The Killers 'Mr. Brightside' has generated four MTV VMA nominations - Best Group Video, Best Rock Video, Best New Artist In A Video and Best Art Direction In A Video.

This year's awards ceremony will be presented by The Diddy (the latest moniker of Puff Daddy) and will feature original music from hip-hop producer Lil Jon and Linkin Park producer Mike Shinoda.

The Killers will have to work on those nerves that they are reported to have had before Glastonbury this year: This year's ceremony will be available to a potential viewing audience of over 1 billion people via MTV's 45 channels and online programming.

It all kicks off, including elaborate pre-show posturing, which this year involves celebs arriving  in 'pimped-up' yachts and cars, on MTV UK at 7pm Monday August 29.
