John Peel Honoured With Hundreds Of Gigs

added 13 October 2005 at 10.27

Almost a year since the legendary DJ John Peel passed away, hundreds of bands across the world will simultaneously play at hundreds of events to mark the loss.

Billed as John Peel Day, today (October 13) is the one-year anniversary of the DJ's last show and has been organised to celebrate the man’s life and contribution to music.

In a fitting tribute, bands, venue owners and promoters have been encouraged to organise a gig or club night no matter how small under the John Peel Day banner and the music world has responded en mass.

At least 300 concerts have been organised in venues ranging from the backrooms of pubs to the gig that kicked it all off last night at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, featuring (amongst others) New Order, The Fall, and Super Furry Animals.

Celebrities playing host at the event included Jarvis Cocker, Fergal Sharkey from The Undertones, Griff Rhys and the Peel’s family neighbour Delia Smith.

In a heartfelt tribute at the gig, New Order frontman Bernard Sumner told the assembled crowd his band would have got "nowhere" without Peel's support for their former incarnation, Joy Division.

Hundreds of events are taking place around the UK today while other events are also being held in Spain, Germany, Italy, USA, Holland, New Zealand and Canada.

So get out there. Support new music, especially stuff you’ve never even heard of before. Have a drink, and raise it to John Peel. Here’re just a few of the events happening in London and around the UK today:
