Hear The Best Summer Anthems

added 21 June 2005 at 19.53

The entries for The Breakfast Show's Feelgood Hit Of The Summer competition have started rolling in, and here's where you'll hear the best of them.

As always, we've been impressed and delighted with the standard of all the entries we've received and we'd like to thank all of you who've entered so far. The competition isn't over yet, but here are the best entries that we've received so far. Go on, buy an ice cream, get out your deckchair, get your knotted hankie on your head and have a listen.

'Song For Summer' by Brett Bibby & The Wheatlys
[listen]

A valiant attempt from the past masters of Breakfast Show inspired tunes, with a proven pedigree (as it was Brett Bibby & The Wheatlys who wrote the classic Top 10 hit  'Born In England' for Xfm's Song For Euro 2004 competition).

'I Had A Dream' by The 66 Kicks
[listen]

This lot sound an awful lot The Libertines. Meaning the early bright and breezy era of Doherty and Barat's outfit, not the bleak, drug-addled atmosphere of their final death-rattling months (sorry, that was a bit depressing for a summer tune biog).

'Beer Garden' by Anon
[listen]

Well, we like this instrumental tune, but whoever submitted it didn't include their name and details. However, it has got an insanely catchy riff to it. Just imagine what Chas & Dave could add to this beauty. If you wrote it, e-mail us by clicking here.

'Hazy' by The Colours
[listen]

This is a song about lying the park in summer with a beautiful girl and a crate of beer. That's why its called 'Hazy' (although a better title would be 'Life Is F**king Amazing'). Incidentally, he lead singer sounds exactly like Simon Le Bon, which is either a good thing or a bad thing depending on your view of fat, middle aged, gakked-up new romantic Brummies)

'An English County Garden' by Captain Grumblewart And The Cockney Rebel
[listen]

If you ask for a Chas and Dave-style cockney banjo wigout, and boy, that's what you've got (we're still not sure if Captain Grumblewart is a real Captain, or if The Cockney Rebel was one of Steve Harley's Cockney Rebels).

'The Old Magnifico' by The Fools Of Fortune
[listen]

To this lot, the best thing about summer is the pub (and quite correctly too). This i is a song about what writer George Orwell described as the best pub in the land, 'The Old Magnifico' (this may not actually be true).

'Sunshine' by Hiraki & Baff
[listen]

The heirs to Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. 'Sunshine' is a mellow summer tune with a cool relaxed vibe. Imagine strolling down the street to this, wearing a string vest while sucking on a Ribena ice lolly.

'Summerchicks' by Summerchicks
[listen]

This is what billion-selling America middle of the road soft-rockers Hootie & The Blowfish would sound like if they entered this competition. Not necessarily a bad thing, but not necessarily the best thing. It's not Hootie & The Blowfish in disguise is it?

'Rock & Roll Summer' by Outl4w
[listen]

Outl4w gathered a certain amount of acclaim and respect for Rock School entry, very nearly winning the contest in fact. Once again they have done us proud with their in-your-face composition 'Rock & Roll Summer'.

'Summer Love' by Stan Totten
[listen]

A long-term musical friend of the show, Stan has pitched his not-inconsiderable talent at pretty much every musical competition we have ever launched at Xfm including 'Song For Breakfast' and of course our Euro 2004 Anthem. And he's outdone himself this time. "On and on, on and on, on and on, on and on..."

'Summer Time' by Alex Martin
[listen]

A cool, half overdriven, half acoustic track with a nice Paul Weller-ish vibe to it by Mr Martin. Especially impressive as he mentions the words 'Sun', 'Summer' and 'Summertime' no fewer than thirteen times. Which is exactly the kind of thing a good anthem needs.

'British Summer Time' by Corneilus Chapman
[listen]

A wonderfully cheerful ditty from Mr Cornelius Chapman (who describes himself as London's most famous Septuagenarian rogue). Cornelius has taken time out from his traditional pursuits of hunting, moustache-growing and general gallivanting to pen this tune about the English weather. Includes whistling (a good thing).

'The Bar' by The Big Name Hunters
[listen]

An incredibly catchy track that sums up all the best aspects of the classic Summer indie tune. Lots of jangling guitars and lots of vocals that go 'Baaaa-baaaa-baaaaaa-baaaaaaaa' like a herd of sheep on Prozac. Brilliant.

‘Music’ by Milton Mizzora
[listen]

An indie-tastic, jingly jangly little song that moves along quite nicely. Bless em. Great name too. Sounds like he should be a famous 17th century poet or a kind of particularly wiffy cheese.

‘O.K.’ by Mike Godfrey
[listen]

Nice acoustic song with good harmonies. Enjoys a stripped down unplugged feel to it. And its impossible to dislike a song with such a positive title.

‘She’s Made Of Summer’ by Mark Lennon
[listen]

This song is apparently about a girl who is actually 'Made of summer'. Whether this is technically possible or not is unknown, but regardless its a cool 'music of the mid 90’s but in a sunny meadow' kinda thing.

‘Summertime’ by Iain Wilson
[listen]

This is the first Simon & Garfunkel style folky type entry. Especially memorable as it contains the greatest lyric of any song that we've received in the competition so far, which is "You are lemon barley water." Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh.

‘Back To The Summer’ by Tracer
[listen]

There's a classic Baggy Manchester feel to this one, think Shaun Ryder, think Ian Brown, think nicking car stereo for scag. Lyrically though its a song about summers of the past. Jumpers for goalposts, fizzbombs at half time, etc, etc.

‘In The Summertime’ by Robert Bantin
[listen]

You can’t ask more than a song with a Spanish guitar flourishing in the background. Nuff said

‘Festival Day’ by Conrad De Souza
[listen]

Surprisingly this is the first song about the annual summer festival experience. Although strangely there's no mention of having to wee in a Lucozade bottle, not having a wash for three days and the forbidden pleasure of repeatedly punching a crusty juggler in the face.

‘Beaches, Beer And Barbeques’ by Kat O’ Brien
[listen]

Its like Kate Bush never retired from the music scene. Charming, nay ethereal, vocals and a cool breezy mood. But more to the point you can never go wrong with a song about having a barbecue. I can nearly smell the salmonella-ridden sausage and the aroma of burning hair.
