Foo Fighters Make People “Beat The Shit Out Of Each Other”

added 03 May 2005 at 13.25

In a new interview Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has explained the political edge on his new album title, ‘In Your Honor’, disses his last record, and talks about making songs that “make people beat the shit out of each other the first time they hear them."

As he prepares for the release of the new Foo’s album ‘In Your Honor’, Grohl has very publicly distanced himself from its predecessor, 2002’s ‘One by One’.

"I was kinda pissed at myself for the last record," Grohl explained to MTV. "Four of the songs were good, and the other seven I never played again in my life. We rushed into it and we rushed out of it."

The new double album features an acoustic disc ("I couldn't believe that our band is capable of making something so beautiful") and a pure rock disc ("I wanted to have songs that make people beat the shit out of each other the first time they hear them") the former sees the ex-Nirvana sticksman teaming up with Norah Jones and Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones on the songs ‘Virginia Moon’ and ‘Miracle’ respectively.

"She was playing dog-ear stuff, where you cock your head in disbelief," says Grohl of Jones, "It was perfect on the first take" but he reserves his hero worship for John Paul Jones saying, "If I say it's the greatest thing that happened to me in my life, my wife will get mad, so it's the second greatest."

The album’s title reportedly came after Grohl spent time on the campaign trail with US election Democrat candidate John Kerry. "We'd pull in to small towns, and thousands of people would come to be rescued by this man," says Grohl. "It's not a political record, but what I saw inspired me."

The album has been recorded in the new DualDisc format, with a 5.1 audio mix on the DVD side along with making-of-the album footage and Grohl has been hinting that when the band head out on their as-yet-unconfirmed tour they will be playing two gigs in each town, a large scale rock show and a more intimate acoustic set.

Foo Fighters will be playing T in the Park in Kinross, Scotland on July 9, the Oxegen Festival in Ireland on July 10 and the Reading And Leeds Carling Weekender on August 27 and 28.
