Breakfast Anthems - The Winner!

added 03 March 2005 at 14.59

We've come a long way (baby) and it's been a long and winding road. Looks like we've made it, look how far we've come now (baby). Yes, at last we can announce the winner of the Xfm Breakfast Show Anthem Competition.

So here we are then. From near on 100 entries, Christian and the team picked the five finalists The LadyboysCaptain Grumblewart & His Band Of Pirates, Julian Bing, Charles & Audrey and Batteries Not Included and let you - the listeners - vote for the ultimate winner.

And vote you did. Big style. We had thousands of texts and Brian from the Breakfast Show  has been up all night, counting and re-counting the figures using his abacus, his calculator watch, some smarties with numbers biro-ed on them, fridge magnets, an old D90 cassette tape recording of The Count from Sesame Street and quite possibly his fingers and toes.

You could say that all the five finalists were winners just for getting this far. You could say that there's no such thing as losing because in the greater scheme of things as long as you're creating beautiful music that feeds your mind and soul then you're always a winner. You could say that, but you'd probably be talking b*****ks.

So we are proud to announce that 'Mornin' Monkey' by The Ladyboys stormed to the finish line and crossed the tape first with the most votes. So they win.  Congratulations to the band -  Gareth Cornick, Paul Shakespeare and Chariya Janthong, who have won the trip for six to Los Angeles with our wonderful friends at British Airways, to stay for seven full days at the famed and luxurious Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel. Which is a top notch prize we reckon.

But seriously now folks, we cannot express our thanks enough. It sounds like, a cliche but the standard was incredibly high and we listened to every single entry. This kind of thing proves how cool our listeners really are. Can you imagine any other Breakfast Show pulling something like this off? I think not. So thank you all.

WINNER

The Ladyboys
[listen]

'Mornin' Monkey' by The Ladyboys (actually Gareth Cornick, Paul Shakespeare and Chariya Janthong) was always a big favourite of the show and in the end it triumphed. Great tune, wonderful vocals and smashing lyrics - 'Would you like a cup of tea.... Or toast?' We warned you that this shit was fly (and quite possibly dope as well) and we were right.

2nd PLACE

Captain Grumblewart & His Band Of Pirates
[listen]

This rather nicely produced entry - entitled 'Christian In The Morning' - has an ear-pleasing musical mood, part pirate sea-shanty, part folk tune. However the lyrics swing from gently sycophantic to utter abuse. Which is - quite frankly - just the way we like it. Ahoy mateys!

3rd PLACE

Charles & Audrey
[listen]

Mark K calls this composition 'Christian Would Like To Have Sex With A Monkee Kee Kee Kee'. However ambitious it sounds, Mark says it's really "Just me twatting around with a guitar and a computer and some Grolsch which is currently on offer at my local Tesco (otherwise it would be Stella)." In fact, it's the return of everyone's favourite computerised voice duo Charles & Audrey. We still think its f**king funny.

4th PLACE

Batteries Not Included
[listen]

This track entitled 'Action Bran' arrived the day before the competition ended, and we're thankful it did. An ambitious effort it attempts to encompass punk, ska and comedy rock (and obviously monkeys) within the theme of an advert for a Christian O'Connell action figure. AND it includes the line "You'll never need to touch your knob again".

5th PLACE

Julian Bing
[listen]

This came as something of a shock to us, as we always thought the surname Bing was restricted to smug prescription drug-addicted New Yorkers in irritating sitcoms. Apparently not. Anyway, Julian sent his entry 'You Get Me Up' in a huge DVD case covered in happy messages like 'Anthem!'. 'Good Luck!' and 'Hello Xfm!' which instantly made us like him. And the song is blinding cool too. Kinda like Marc Bolan meets Muddy Waters meets Jack White.
