Breakfast Anthems - Hear The Finalists

added 25 February 2005 at 15.15

Voting is over! Christian O'Connell and the Xfm Breakfast Show team decided on a Top 5 for their Breakfast Anthems Competition, and you voted for your favourite. But who will be the ultimate winner?

We're nearly there. Last week, Christian and the team decided upon the five finalists from near on 100 entries. The LadyboysCaptain Grumblewart & His Band Of Pirates, Julian Bing, Charles & Audrey and Batteries Not Included all went through to the next round.

Five finalists were then put to a public text vote during the Breakfast Show to find the ultimate winner (who will be getting a trip for them and five friends to Los Angeles with our wonderful friends at British Airways, to stay for seven full days at the famed and luxurious Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel).

After four hours of frantic texting the vote has now closed. As we speak, Brian is counting, recounting, checking and re-checking the number of votes to find out who has won and the winner will be announced on the Christian O'Connell Breakfast Show tomorrow (Friday March 4).

But, just to tide you over, here are the final five for you to listen to one more time. And may the best team win.

The Ladyboys
[listen]

'Mornin' Monkey' by The Ladyboys (actually Gareth Cornick, Paul Shakespeare and Chariya Janthong) was always a big favourite of the show. Great tune, wonderful vocals and smashing lyrics - 'Would you like a cup of tea.... Or toast?' This shit is fly, and quite possibly dope as well.

Captain Grumblewart & His Band Of Pirates
[listen]

This rather nicely produced entry - entitled 'Christian In The Morning' - has an ear-pleasing musical mood, part pirate sea-shanty, part folk tune. However the lyrics swing from gently sycophantic to utter abuse. Which is - quite frankly - just the way we like it. Ahoy mateys!

Julian Bing
[listen]

This came as something of a shock to us, as we always thought the surname Bing was restricted to smug prescription drug-addicted New Yorkers in irritating sitcoms. Apparently not. Anyway, Julian sent his entry 'You Get Me Up' in a huge DVD case covered in happy messages like 'Anthem!'. 'Good Luck!' and 'Hello Xfm!' which instantly made us like him. And the song is blinding cool too. Kinda like Marc Bolan meets Muddy Waters meets Jack White.

Charles & Audrey
[listen]

Mark K calls this composition 'Christian Would Like To Have Sex With A Monkee Kee Kee Kee'. However ambitious it sounds, Mark says it's really "Just me twatting around with a guitar and a computer and some Grolsch which is currently on offer at my local Tesco (otherwise it would be Stella)." In fact, it's the return of everyone's favourite computerised voice duo Charles & Audrey. We think its f**king funny.

Batteries Not Included
[listen]

This track entitled 'Action Bran' arrived the day before the competition ended, and we're thankful it did. An ambitious effort it attempts to encompass punk, ska and comedy rock (and obviously monkeys) within the theme of an advert for a Christian O'Connell action figure. AND it includes the line "You'll never need to touch your knob again".

The text voting has now closed.

The winner will be announced on The Christian O'Connell Breakfast Show tomorrow (Friday March 4).
