Audioslave Shut Down Hollywood

Rage Against The Machine and Soundgarden supergroup, Audioslave brought traffic in to a halt when they staged a free concert in Los Angeles earlier this week to celebrate the release of their second album ‘Out of Exile’.
According to Xfm’s source on Wednesday (May 18) Los Angeles witnessed “Shaking buildings, screaming people, crowds filling the streets, hundreds of police, helicopters hovering overhead,” but no, not due to an earthquake, it was Audioslave playing a free concert hot off their historic free outdoor concert in Cuba, a first for the communist country.
A hometown crowd of thousands witnessed Chris Cornell, Tim Commerford, Tom Morello and Brad Wilk taking to a large stage in the middle of Hollywood Boulevard, while the performance was broadcast nationally all over America live on talk show ‘The Jimmy Kimmel Show’.
In effect, the band shut down nearly a square mile of traffic in the very car-dependent city, because swarms of fans filled the surrounding areas to hear the band’s show. The LAPD preliminarily estimated the crowd to have reached near 10,000.
Host Kimmel joked with the band saying “Let’s see if we can make enough noise to get somebody arrested tonight.” with guitarist Morello responding “We’ll do our best.”
The band played new songs ‘Your Time Has Come’ and ‘Be Yourself’ and continued the concert after the television show ended, treating fans to a couple of songs from their self titled debut album.
The outrageous performance was reminiscent of Audioslave’s New York appearance on ‘The Late Show with David Letterman’ in November 2002 where they played a concert for fans from atop the marquee outside the studio, clogging traffic in midtown (read more).
The last time Hollywood Boulevard saw so much chaos (besides the Oscars), was when Coldplay played the Kimmel show in January 2003 after the Super Bowl. They played a mini-set from a stage in the street to thousands of people (read more).
