X-clusive: The Detroit Cobras 'Twist’ Again

added 15 September 2004 at 11.22

Fresh off the back off an advertising campaign for a particularly large soft drinks firm, the Detroit Cobras spoke exclusively to Xfm Online about their new LP ‘Baby’ and exactly how much money they got paid to soundtrack two girls drinking Diet Coke and pushing over some mannequins.

While the name, Detroit Cobras, may be unknown to the great British public as a whole, anybody who’s been within 10ft of a television set will have heard the contagious sounds of the single ‘Cha Cha Twist’. Singer Rachel Nagy explained how it came about.

‘Cha Cha Twist’ is a song we did a while back on our first record and it’s something we’ve just always played, it’s a fun thing to do,” Nagy explains. People haven’t really been bothered about [the fact we allowed Coca Cola to use the song], but we got enough cash to pay some bills. It didn’t exactly make us wealthy people.”

The video for the track was made by friend and White Stripes co-conspirator Anthony Garth (who directed the promo for ‘Hotel Yorba’) although making music videos isn’t exactly his primary career concern…

“He’s just a guy from around town,” she says, “And he’s also our bar tender. He pours a mean Margarita, so we said ‘Pour us a drink and make us a video’. We thought we’d use someone we knew and he did a great job.”

With their public profile rising swiftly, the band’s new album is released on November 1 and Nagy explained how it got its title.

“The album’s called ‘Baby’ as there are about four songs on the album where the main word in the song is just ‘Baby’. We recorded it whenever we were back in Detroit, but it was hard because we were always just coming off tour – we just recorded whenever we had some time.

“We’ll be back in the UK for a month soon,” she concluded, “But after that we’ll just have to see what happens next.”
