X-clusive: South Come Clean About '...Crime'

added 05 August 2004 at 13.48

Fresh from wowing crowds at this year’s Fuji Rock Festival, Joel Cadbury of indie tunesmiths South spoke exclusively to Xfm about his band’s new single ‘Motiveless Crime’.

With the release of the single ‘Motiveless Crime’ this week, Cadbury explains how the track fits with the rest of the album ‘With The Tides’.

“It was the first track that we recorded for the album, and sonically its quite unique sounding. It’s pretty much my favourite track on the album so it’s great that we’re getting to release it as a single. The lyrics are a montage collected from different places, which goes well with flow and mood of the track.”

Having just returned from Japan, the frontman has only good words to say about Fuji Rock, even making a controversial claim about its status in the festival pecking order.

“It really is the best festival in the world,” Cadbury enthuses. “It’s brilliant. We watched White Stripes from the stage and met them afterwards. They’re really nice guys.

“I got to sit in Joe Strummers Caravan, which is in the equivalent of Glastonbury’s Lost Vagueness. The year before he died, he had a caravan and they’ve kept it in the field as a memorial, so there was Ed from the Chemical Brothers and me having lots of fun in this tiny little caravan.”

South are also confirmed to play the Xfm Stage at the TDK Cross Central Festival this August bank holiday weekend (August 28-29).

“It’s looking like a great line-up” Cadbury says. “The bill’s really brilliant, it’s really good to see that [the organisers] have got such an impressive group of bands and artists together. It’ll be great to see people like Terry Callier and Courtney Pine, but at the same time young and energetic bands like Dogs Die In Hot Cars. It should be cool.”

The TDK Cross Central festival takes place August Bank Holiday Weekend (August 27, 28 and 29) at Kings Cross Freight Depot, Goods Yard, London N1.
