X-clusive: Simple Kid On 2004

added 15 January 2004 at 11.10

Simple Kid mainman Ciaran McFeely has been speaking exclusively to Xfm Online about his forthcoming single release, bizarre three night club residency, and his online creation making a play for world domination. No, really.

McFeely explained that, although it has seen the light of the singles racks before, the new remixed version of the single, 'Truck On' (released January 19), sounds better than ever.

"Steve Fitz-Morris, who worked on the album with me, made some changes and we've rejigged it and beefed it up a bit to make it a bit more palatable to the rest of the world. The new version sounds great."

As well as a new single, the 'Kid also plans to kick off 2004 in style, taking over the 12 Bar Club for a three night stint (January 20-22) under the moniker 'The Simple Club'. But in true Simple Kid-style, it won't just be your average three-night residency.

"The first night will probably be Sample Kid which is me with my laptop playing my album with loads of samples and deconstructing the songs into something quite odd.

"Then another night we'll do Skiffle Kid which is going to be a Johnny Cash tribute. It'll be me doing all my songs country style, with banjos and possibly some spoon players. We'll do a few songs people haven't heard before as well, I'm always writing country songs that never make it out of my bedroom.

"Then on the last night we might do Casio Kid or Karaoke Kid or just a bit of everything."

These shows will follow a hectic end to 2003, which saw Simple Kid win an Interactive Music Award, an honour bestowed on his site (www.simplekid.com) and its famous Robot Brain.

The Brain, an 'independent thinking character', is however, hell bent on world domination. As McFeely explains,

"Olly and Matt [the website's designers] created the robot brain and generally they just want to bring down civilisation. [The brain] learns the more and more its used, so in a couple of years time it could be quite a scary prospect.

"Its coming out to gigs with us now and the audience can ask it questions during the show. We're just choosing a voice for it at the moment. Its getting dangerously out of hand."

The Simple Club residency will take place at the 12 Bar Club (Denmark Place, WC2) January 20 - 22. Doors -open at 7:30pm and rumour has it that the robot brain may also be making a debut appearance as guest DJ.

Tickets are available now priced at a very reasonable £7.00 per show, but fans can also buy a special Simple Club Carnet for £15, which will guarantee them entry to all three nights. Call the venue on 020 7209 2248 for details or click right about here.
