X-clusive: M.A.S.S. Too Blonde For Blondie?

added 03 June 2004 at 16.46

Justine Berry, singer with Brit punksters M.A.S.S., explains exactly why they were banned from supporting Blondie just minutes before they were set to take the stage. Apparently, some hair dye wouldn't have gone a miss.

In a bizarre turn of coincidence, it seems Blondie singer Debbie Harry has had a clause added to the contract of her support acts insisting that no blonde-haired female can support Blondie. Which made it quite tricky for M.A.S.S. singer Justine Berry

"When we arrived at the venue," Berry explains, "The promoter looked at me and just said 'Oh no no, she [Debbie Harry] doesn't like any blonde female support acts.

"So we were asked to play the after show party instead, which was fine by us - we were just chuffed to have been asked and we got to see her and Blondie live.

"She really had nothing to worry about, but it would have been cool to tour with her, especially as people always say M.A.S.S. are like The Strokes fronted by Debbie Harry."

Now living in France and signed to a French record label, the five-piece are currently readying their debut album 'Revolution' for release on June 14.

"Our label are so chuffed to have an English band signed that actually want to live in France that its all a bit crazy for us," Berry continued. "They've helped us loads and we've been playing so many gigs with so many great bands - like The Datsuns show in Paris on June 9."

However, living in France does bring some drawbacks. Such as having to watch the England vs France Euro 2004 match surrounded by French people just waiting to rub in a continental victory.

"We've got a huge screen set up in our house and we're inviting all our French friends over for a party to watch the match round ours," Berry concludes, "but the boys are going to have to fill me in 'cause I haven't got a clue about football."

The band play London's Borderline on July 23 and the Steventon indie spectacular, Truck Festival on July 24.
