X-clusive: Engineers “I’d love a mini Pink Floyd”

Following in the footsteps of Hope Of The States and Radiohead in the Challenging Indie Band bracket, Engineers drummer and co-writer Sweeney took time away from piecing together the band’s debut album to speak exclusively to Xfm Online.
Very much a studio band, Engineers will be venturing onto the road this week as support act for The Music before embarking on their first headline tour proper in October. Sweeney explained what to expect from the forthcoming live shows.
“It’s a lot raunchier and louder than on record,” he says, “It's actually very intense. When we do our headline tour we’ll be taking the full stage set-up with us including our visuals, they’re a hugely important part of our show. It’s not the kind of music to jump up and down to like Busted, so it needs another side and that’s our lights and visuals. And if we get the money I’ll take that side as far as I can – I’d love a mini Pink Floyd if we can.”
With ‘Come In Out Of The Rain’ (the lead single from the mini-album ‘Folly’) currently going down a storm at Xfm, Sweeney explained the influences that inform the band’s sound.
“Our upbringing was the Beach Boys and Stax soul so we naturally make ‘big’ sounding records,” he continues. “There’s a track on both the EP and the album that we’ve done with Tim Holmes from Death In Vegas that’s great – it’s my favourite track at the moment. He gets a great performance out of us and is so easy to work with we’d definitely like to work with him again.”
In-keeping with the band’s penchant for the aesthetic, the video for ‘Come In Out Of The Rain’ is unlike anything you’ll have seen possibly ever. Mixing animation and photography Sweeney explained how it came about.
“It was just thrown on us one day when we met this guy who told us the story and we fell in love with it – and the finished results are just bonkers."
Both the single ‘Come In Out Of The Rain’ and the band’s mini album ‘Folly’ are out now.
