X-clusive: Dogs Die In Hot Cars Speak!

added 27 April 2004 at 12.22

With a new single and new album in the pipeline, singer Craig Macintosh and bassplayer Lee Worrall of Glaswegian hopefuls Dogs Die In Hot Cars speak exclusively to Xfm about the pogo-tastic single 'Godhopping'.

Successfully adding to their reputation as a band with often indecipherable lyrics, 'Godhopping' finds DDIHC in an especially obtuse mood (with talk of going "…All the way to Bombay") , not that Macintosh knows where his inspiration comes from...

"While I'm not entirely sure what the lyrics [of 'Godhopping'] are actually about," he explains, "I was reading the book by the director of 'Donnie Darko' [Richard Kelly], and he said he'd been asked many times what its about, and he said "I don't know what its about, but I understand it." I think that's how I'm going to sum up every song I ever write."

"The title 'Godhopping' refers to people that change religion in order to get aid of missionaries," Macintosh continues, "The song has nothing to do with that at all, but it spawned other ideas about how we act and what inspires that kind of behaviour."

With a couple of well-received EPs under their belt, and time spent on the road honing their live sound, the band will release their major-label in July through V2. Just as soon as it has a title…

"The album's all finished, all mixed and all ready to slide off the shelf on July 12, but we just don't have a title yet." Worrall admits. "But we need a title by tomorrow," Macintosh interjects, "So we've got twelve hours to sort it out. But the running orders all sorted and we couldn't be more pleased with it."

As for the rest of the year, the band head out on a headlining tour in May before preparing themselves for an onslaught on the summer festivals, (whichever ones they actually play at.)

"T in the Park is going to be great, but that's the only one [we're] confirmed [to play]at the moment." Worral reveals. "But I've heard we're doing them all…" Macintosh discloses. "Oh come on, we will be, won't we?"

"If we could do just one though it would have to be Reading," he continues "Ten years ago myself, Lee and Lawrence [Davey, drummer] went to Reading to see the Chilis. We were all about 14 or 15 years old, and if someone had told us then that we'd be playing there in ten years time, that would have been ridiculous."

Dogs Die In Hot Cars release 'Godhopping' this week (April 26), with the currently untitled album slated to hit the shops July 12.
