X-clusive: Blink 182 On World Peace And Ejaculation

added 05 February 2004 at 12.48

Pop-punksters Mark, Tom and Travis a.k.a. Blink 182 pull into town this week for a five-date whistlestop tour of the UK, but still found time to drop into Xfm for a chat and to play an exclusive session for Lauren Laverne.

The seemingly fearless group from San Diego were all fired up for tomorrow’s (February 6) huge Wembley Arena show to promote their eponymous new album and new single, ‘I Miss You’. Until Lauren stepped in, that is.

“Oh my God” said Tom “We weren’t nervous at all until you asked us if we were getting nervous. Now I really am – it’d be fine if we’d practiced at all. We should probably do that some time.”

On the upside the band then got some time rehearsing for the upcoming gigs. On the downside it was on live radio as they ripped through a blinding version of ‘I Miss You’ and went on to tell Lauren how they might be developing a little maturity.

“We have grown up a bit” Tom explained “When everyone first heard it, they all said this is a new mature sound, a new mature Blink, and we said ‘No, no its not – we haven’t changed!’ but I think we have. We’re all older and have kids. We’ve got the same young hearts but obviously as you get older you’ll mature a bit.”

Tom’s explanation, however, was immediately rubbished by Mark who could be heard shouting “He’s lying!” in the background, before pointing out that they had “…begun the interview discussing breasts, and a guy with his penis in a mailbox.”

The band also recently completed a number of $1 entry shows in the States, though did concede that they only ever planned to give the fans a show worth $1.

“It was real fun, we just took a show out a played $1 worth of songs – basically all the ones about sock wanking. We wanted to bring the show over here but we just couldn’t.” Tom said “Your pound's too strong – There’d have been no quality whatsoever!”

Covering every subject from ‘the critics’ loving their new album to Jordan’s breasts in the ten minute interview, the band left the studio in no doubt that what they do is good for them, for us and for humanity.

“We’re still best friends, but what we do goes above that – we genuinely believe that the music we make could contribute to world peace” explained Mark “well…sort of.”

The band's new single 'I Miss You' is released March 1 with the band sticking around for the next week to tour the UK.
