X-clusive: Björk On New Album And Charlie’s Angels

Currently in the UK to promote her new record ‘Medulla’, Björk dropped in on Lauren Laverne’s Drivetime show to talk about her all-vocal new album, having fifty albums ready to go and why she turned down a role as one of Charlie’s Angels.
For her fifth studio album, Björk has succeeded in creating an album that is ambitious, individual and just very Björk. Constructed entirely from human voices (“Well, there was just one gong on it,” she admits), she explained exactly where the title ‘Medulla’ came from.
“I try with album titles to pick something that’s slightly international like ‘Post’ or ‘Debut’,” she begins. “‘Medulla’ is a Latin word, it’s a medical term. I think people can pronounce it how they want, I’ve heard Spanish and Italians use it in everyday language. It means just ‘marrow’ as in ‘bone marrow’.
“The whole album is quite physical and especially as it’s just the human voice I thought it’d be fitting to get to the core of things. Everything’s stripped back and I’ll occasionally listen to that kind of thing in my house. I just wanted it to be pure and naked, like when you get a craving for tequila straight up. It’s that sort of an album.”
Sadly for her fans, Björk explained she probably won’t be touring this album. However, the positive side of this is that it won’t be long until she releases yet more new material. She also revealed an unlikely offer to move into the ultra-commercial Hollywood…
“I’d like to do another album first,” she considers. “It may or may not be another vocal album, I haven’t decided. Then I’ll probably tour both albums together. I’ve got maybe fifty albums in my head, and if I’m lucky I may get to make ten of them – there has to be a balance. I can’t see myself making any more films though, because I’d rather spend all my time on music and if I start having an affair I won’t be loyal to anything and it will become all wishy-washy.
“I was actually offered the chance to be one of Charlie’s Angels, but I turned it down. I think you should find your lot and try to do it really well.“
Björk releases the single ‘Who Is It’ on November 8 while the album ‘Medulla’ is out now.
