The Flaming Lips Come Out: They’re Surrounded

The Flaming Lips have confirmed that they will be re-releasing their seminal 1999 LP ‘The Soft Bulletin’ in 5.1 Surround Sound. Critically acclaimed and arguably their most accomplished record, fans will now be able to experience ‘…Bulletin’ from five different angles at the same time, no less.
Following the success of the 5.1 remixing of 2002's ‘Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots’ the band have once again employed the services of engineer Dave Fridmann do the business for ‘…Bulletin’.
The surround sound remix of ‘Yoshimi…’ featured unreleased and alternate versions of tracks as well as a DVD containing video clips. However, it has not yet been confirmed whether the ‘…Bulletin’ version, set for a release early next year, will contain equivalent treats.
Elsewhere in F’Lips news, the band will also be making a whole host of band photos available for fans, via their website. The collection, entitled ‘Waking Up with a Placebo Head Wound: Images of The Flaming Lips from the Archives of Jay Blakesberg and J. Michelle Martin-Coyne 1987-2004’ is reported to feature more than 350 images of the band and will be limited to just 1,500 copies.
It will also feature essays from band members Michael Ivins and Steven Drozd, manager Scott Booker, publicist Rick Gershon, singer Wayne Coyne's wife and a foreword written by Wayne, himself. Orders made by November 12 will come complete with a special seven-inch picture disc containing two new studio tracks from the band’s long-awaited feature film ‘Christmas on Mars’.
As previously reported, the band’s next LP will be entitled ‘At War with the Mystics’ and is currently tentatively scheduled for release summer 2005.
New songs expected to appear in the record include 'Space Bible' and 'Mr. Ambulance Driver'.
“It's about a guy and a gal,” Coyne of the latter song, “And the gal is dying after a car accident and it's the moment they share as the ambulance approaches."
The band are currently putting the finishing touches to the album, but have confirmed live appearances at the US All Tomorrow's Parties festival in Long Beach, California on November 6 alongside Lou Reed, The Shins, The Walkmen and Sufjan Stevens.
