The Fiery Furnaces 'X-posure Live' [Dial-Up] [Broadband]
Brother/sister songwriting team Eleanor and Matt Friedberger deliver a unique stream-of-consciousness series of punk-length, twisted lullabies, poems and nursery rhymes with very litte pause for breath. Eleanor's Karen-O-esque delivery doesn't help in terms of any attempts you may be making to anchor yourself to something solid amidst the rolling, reeling bewildering cavalcade of snares, riffs and organ grinding but, more than anything else it's what gives The Fiery Furnaces much of their magnetic attraction.
'I Broke My Mind', 'Don't Dance Her Down', 'I'm Gonna Run' and more all run together to the point where the next song seems to be starting in the middle of the last one. There's no song here that sounds much like anything else, or indeed like any other Fiery Furnace's song, but for short stories on everything from the London underground to recalcitrant pups, The Fiery Furnaces' sharp, angular anarchy has no equal.
Sons & Daughters 'X-posure Live'
[Dial-Up]
[Broadband]
Purveyors of dirty, menacing folk in the sinsiter, medieval style of Nick Cave, Sons & Daughters are more candid than most as far as influences are concerned, with two song's from tonight's set being named after obvious touchstones; 'L.Cohen' and new single 'Johnny Cash'.
Adele Bethel and Scott Patterson's vocal exchanges make for the spine of the band, whether delivering furious goth hoedowns on 'Dance Me In' or spinning more delicate webs on the fraught 'La Lune'. Watch their brooding set in full and be among the first to experience Goth-Folk.
