[Broadband]
A Franco-German, girl-bot duo in leather trousers playing with a wild assortment of keyboards, retro guitars and a mini drum kit. It may not seem like the likeliest starting point for a sparkling chocolate box of rapid fire pop gems but the fact remains that Stereo Total are as unique an act as you'll ever see. Fuelled by the kind of enthusiasm that only exists within the hearts and souls of European genre benders, Francoise Cactus (girl, French, singing and drums) and Bretel Goring (boy, German, keyboards and guitars) run wildly from electro to punk to God-knows-what. Songs rarely stick around for more than two and a half minutes - as soon as you think you've got a handle on where they're going they abruptly switch direction again. Whether twisting 'My Way' into strange, teutonic shapes on 'Comme D'Habitude' or extolling the virtures of group sex in the charming 'Love With The Three Of Us' they're as culturally, musically and lyrically diverse as most festival bills.
Rilo Kiley 'X-Posure Live'
[Dial-Up]
[Broadband]
One of the formative acts to emerge from the now-burgeoning Omaha music scene (which has spawned the likes of Saddle Creek labelmates Bright Eyes and The Faint), Rilo Kiley are rapidly coming into their own. Their recently released second album - 'The Execution Of All Things' - is a huge step forward from their home-produced debut and makes up the lion's share of their Barfly set. Chief vocalist Jenny Lewis fronts the band with an easy authority backed up by an impressive voice that can soar above the relentless jangle of opener 'The Execution of All Things' to the quiet-quiet-loud dynamics of 'The Good That Won't Come Out'. By the time Jenny invites onstage anyone wanting to sing the anthemic 'With Arms Outstretched', Rilo Kiley's combination of wide-eyed innocence and razor-tongued wit has won them the room.
The Duke Spirit 'X-Posure Live'
[Dial-Up]
[Broadband]
In the wake of their debut mini-album 'Roll, Spirit, Roll' - released earlier this month - The Duke Spirit are taking their gentle buzzsaw riffs to the masses. From 'Bottom Of The Sea's melodic echoes to the foreboding fury of 'Red Weather', this is a band that know where the strings are and how to pull them. The set-closing cover of The Pixies' 'Into The White' only serves to underline their excellent taste.
