Stellastarr* - They Should Coco

added 02 March 2004 at 16.54

Four New York art school graduates playing staccato rock music. Okay so it sounds like you've heard it all before but there's a lot more to Stellastarr* than distressed jeans and asymmetrical haircuts. As the latest Stateside exports crawl over the Xfm playlist with the delightful 'My Coco' you can check out their appearance on Music: Response right here.

Formed in the wake of an argument about non-forwarded mail between strangers, Stellastarr* took their first steps amid New York's garage rock explosion. Their lighter touch and deft melodies were slightly out of step with their leather-jacketed brethren.

They nonetheles thrived on the revitalised live music scene and soon had a South By South West appearance and the lovely 'Somewhere Across Forever' EP under their belts.

Their eponymous, debut - largely recorded at night in between stints at extremely understanding day jobs - was released last year to widespread critical acclaim. They've since shared stages with The Sleepy Jackson, Jane's Addicition and The Strokes, Stellastarr* are heading out on a UK headline tour - on the way they dropped in to play live and chat with Ian Camfield on Music: Response [listen]

Stellastarr* 'Jenny' [Dial-Up] [Broadband]

The band's first live rendition of this pulsing potential paen to sapphia ('Jenny's coming out'). Shawn Christensen in particular is in fine histrionic form.

Stellastarr* 'My Coco' [Dial-Up] [Broadband]
New single and the song most likely to take them to the next level - a stop/start intro, jangling guitars and a choral hook to die for. A tribute to a distant and much-loved mentor, much like 'Fernando' re-imagined by a glamtastic Ride.
