Oasis Star Fined £35,000 For Brawl

Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher has been fined £35,000 for the drunken fight he was involved in while on tour in Germany back in 2002 (in addition to the reported £20,000 he had to pay to get his two front teeth replaced after they were knocked out during the brawl).

The Oasis singer was been fined £35,000 this weekend (November 20) for his involvement in the fight which took place at a nightclub inside the £900-a-night Bayerischer Hof Hotel in Germany where his band were staying during their 2002 European tour.

The affray started when Liam jumped on stage to perform a karaoke version of himself when a disc jockey started playing an Oasis track. A dispute with a group of businessmen at a neighbouring table then followed and members of Oasis’ entourage, protected by their bodyguards, began throwing peanuts.

Fighting broke out soon after with an Oasis minder being knocked out in the brawl while Liam got his two front teeth smashed out. It was reported around ten police cars were dispatched to quell the fight (some claiming that Liam was spotted whirling a microphone stand around “like a Viking battle-axe” before he kung-fu kicked a policeman in the chest).

The attackers had left the scene before police arrived, and several of the Oasis party, including Liam, were taken to the local station for questioning about the incident. Though all were released on bail the band had to cancel two concerts during the tour, loosing hundreds of thousands of pounds, and the bail itself came to £175,000.

“It turned out to be a very expensive night,” said Harald Koenig, the Munich prosecutor, who announced the sentence. The nightclub is to receive £12,000 of the fine for the damage while another £4,000 has been awarded to the injured policeman and the rest is to go to charities in Munich.

Oasis’ lawyers will not challenge the ruling as Liam had already admitted causing the damage. He may have faced a year in jail if convicted of grievous bodily harm, resisting arrest, property damage and trespass.

Oasis wil be playign a series of UK live dates in 2005. They are:

  • Glasgow Hampden Park (June 29)
  • Manchester, City of Manchester Stadium (June 30, July 2 & 3)
  • Milton Keynes National Bowl (July 9 & 10)
