Grand National

Meet London art school rockers Grand National and their intelligent, quirky, experimental pop with intoxicating, electrifying and gripping melodies. Check out their exclusive Xfm session.
Lawrence ‘La’ Rudd and Rupert Lyddon have just completed their first full UK tour and released another single from their excellent 'Kicking The National Habit' album, their New Order and Happy Mondays inspired fusion of melancholic yet uplifting lyrics, thumping basslines and angular guitars, belies Rupert's past in a Police covers band.
Session opener ‘Talk Amongst Yourselves’ [Dial-Up] [Broadband] deals with depression with jerky guitar rhythms, heavenly harmonies and Electro synth beats, but when the party’s over the dejection and desperation of 'Litter Bin' [Dial-Up] [Broadband] kicks in.
The duo describe ‘Playing In The Distance’ [Dial-Up] [Broadband], one of the first songs they ever wrote together, as a dream meeting 'between Dr Dre and Joy Division’. Session closer ‘Drink To Moving On’ [Dial-Up] [Broadband] embraces a bittersweet melody, buzzing guitars and laid-back vocals, apparently a cross between New Order's 'Regret' and The Flaming Lips' 'Race For The Prize'.
