Franz Ferdinand Favourites For Mercurys

The betting for the Mercurys has closed with Franz Ferdinand the favourites, and The Streets and The Zutons not far behind.
Ladbrokes have closed the book ahead of tomorrow night's Mercury Music Prize (September 7) and we can now report that Franz Ferdinand are clear favourites. The Scottish art school rockers were joint favourites with
The Streets from the outset but in recent days punters have clearly picked them out as the winners.
Ladbrokes spokesman Warren Lush said: "Money points to glory for Franz Ferdinand but the biggest gamble has been on The Zutons. The Liverpool bands' odds have been slashed from 14/1 into 3/1."
"The big money has been for 'Who Killed the Zutons?' If the Liverpool band win, it would be a poor result for us and a case of who killed the bookmakers.
"Overall, punters have found this year's Mercury hard to call; there are so many acts who have already established commercial success. All signs indicate that we'll see an historic turning point for Franz Ferdinand or a killer gamble landed by The Zutons."
The overall winner of the 2004 Nationwide Mercury Prize will be announced at a ceremony at Grosvenor House Hotel, London on Tuesday September 7.
The full Mercury Music Prize final odds are:
1. Franz Ferdinand ‘Franz Ferdinand’ 9/4
2. The Streets ‘A Grand Don't Come For Free’ 2/1
3. The Zutons ‘Who Killed The Zutons?’ 3/1
