Fountains of Wayne Have Got It Going On

As the perky west coast pop of 'Stacy's Mom' finally gets the NYC four-piece the mainstream attention they've deserved for so long, Fountains of Wayne visited Music: Response to play live and talk with Ian Camfield.
While it's true that their gently melodic tales of smalltown characters are finding increased favour in these uncertain times, with a history going back to 1996, Fountains of Wayne are neither newcomers or bandwagon jumpers.
In their near decade long career they've earned an Oscar nomination for the eponymous soundtrack tune to Tom Hank's rock 'n' roll movie, 'That Thing You Do'. Now three album's in, the latest, self-financed effort 'Welcome Interstate Managers' dropped late last year.
With the runaway hit 'Stacy's Mom' due out this week, the foursome hit Music: Response to discuss smokin' peyote, the inspiration of Rick Springfield and where they find the characters that inhabit their songs - "It's on 32nd street between 6th and 7th." [listen]

The kind of acoustic, alt.country number that's timeless and honest enough to sound equally at home in a roadside redneck drinking hole or an archly-ironic new York style bar.

With or without Rachel Hunter's star turn in the accompanying promo, this flawless slice of Ivy League guitar pop would have turned enough heads to cause a major pile-up. Classic Americana from back when we liked it.
