Delays Play Surpise Living Room Gig
Southampton quartet and Xfm favourites Delays played a surprise secret gig in the packed North London living room of a special competition winner Becky Matthews last night (November 22). Plus news about a special Xmas Delays live date.
The entire band arrived to play an impromptu, exclusive full live set in Matthew’s lounge in Muswell Hill, North London, after she won a special competition on the band’s website.
Said Becky, 24, “F**king hell! Delays have actually played in my living room! It’s mental… It’s like an episode of ‘The Young Ones'. I keep expecting Alexei Sayle to appear.”
Having spent the last 10 days in pre-production for their sophomore album, the 35-minute set saw the band preview new tracks ‘You See Colours’ and ‘Valentine’, alongside their singles ‘Long Time Coming’, 'Nearer Than Heaven', ‘Wanderlust’ and ‘Lost In A Melody’.
Talking exclusively to Xfm Online, Delays singer-guitarist Greg Gilbert said of the gig, “There’s a romance to gigs like these.”
Speaking of their new album, scheduled for a 2005 release, and the direction that it might take, Gilbert revealed his unexpected influences saying “I love Prince and Abba and I’ve been listening to a lot of Marvin Gaye.”
Though this doesn’t seem to indicate a more dance-orientated direction for the band, as Gilbert continued, “We haven’t got a manifesto. You have to follow your heart…I want to make ‘Thriller’ and ‘Pet Sounds’”
Delays will also be playing the slightly more conventional environs of Cargo in East London for the Xfm Remix Night Xmas Special on December 16 alongside special guests Chikinki.
Delays new single the double A-side ‘Wanderlust’ / ‘Lost In A Melody’ is out now on DVD, CD and 7 vinyl.
