Delays 'Faded Seaside Glamour'

added 08 April 2004 at 11.19

Birthed in the dream-friendly monotony of Southampton, Delays marry angelic vocals to soaring anthemic choruses in a way that will make you smile. Hear their debut 'Faded Seaside Glamour' right here.

Singer Greg Gilbert cut his songwriting teeth to the sound of planes coming and going at his native Southampton's airport. It shows - what emerges more than anything from Delays' compelling cocktail of sparkling guitars, stratospheric vocals and joyous choruses is a sense of movement, of gleeful and celebratory escape. There's no mournful, Morrissey-esque yearning for a better life here - just the utterly optimistic sound of a band with absolutely no doubt in their minds that the world is a glorious place just waiting to be discovered.

'Nearer Than Heaven' has already made them a lot of new friends, not one of whom is going to be disappointed - it's soaraway, anthemic style is typical of the record without ever once descending into a formula. 'Long Time Coming' and 'Hey Girl' take things to even greater heights, heights you could imagine The Las scaling if they'd been a little less keen on smack.

Uplifting and tearjerking as the sound of Delays celebrating is, they're more than capable of brooding introspection at times - 'Satellites Lost' is a fragile creation of sad-eyed melancholy, while 'There's Water Here' is as sad and lonesome as a misplaced Mars Rover.

A lovingly crafted record of rare power and tenderness, 'Faded Seaside Glamour' is one of the most beautiful albums you'll hear this year.
