Chemical Brothers 'The Golden Path'

Tom Chemical Brother talks us through the psychadelic escapist fantasy that is the promo for 'The Golden Path'.

"It was largely the idea of this guy called Chris Milk. When we made the track we could see there was a good idea to go with the video but we couldn't actually work out what that idea was. We got in loads of different directors to put in treatments and his was just the one that excited us the most. And talking to him on the phone, he was really into it and he seemed to understand what we do. He'd been to see us live as well which always counts for a lot with us, that someone understands the release of the music. And he just seemed to put that into his vision. He's a cool guy.
"It's a different video for us; we haven't done a video as light as this in a while. We like our videos to have a moment, a defining thing which everything's leading up to and the bit where he slips through his own shirt is that moment for us. It was just really the case that it came along and charmed us, it leaves you with a different feeling, we wanted a little video that would give you a good feeling at the end of it, kind of like the track does. There's enough weirdness in the track that maybe we wanted the video to be a little bit more straight.
"It illustrates the whole thing about what path you follow in life and the supposed 'Golden Path'. We did an interview with Wayne [Coyne, Flaming Lips vocalist who supplies vocals to 'The Golden Path'] where he explained what he was thinking of and he was talking about these great decisions you make on which path you tread. In the video there's this guy that's dreaming of a better life that he could have lived. Whether or not that is a better life is probably the question in the song. It's for the listener and the viewer to decide."
