Björk Beatbox Craziness: “Instruments Are So Over”

Diminutive diva Björk has announced details of her new studio album including the album’s title, tracklisting and a list of collaborations as long as your arm, with ex-Faith No More man, Mike Patton and Japanese beatboxer Dokaka. No, we’ve not heard of him either.

It has been confirmed that Björk’s follow-up to 2001's ‘Vespertine’ will be entitled ‘Medulla’ and set to be released in the UK on August 30, while the first single is expected to be ‘Oceania’. Following on from her claims in a recent Rolling Stone interview that “instruments are so over”, the record is set to feature, among others, Japanese beatbox artist, Dokaka.

According to Billboard, ‘Medulla’ is likely to be mainly vocal based with Björk’s Icelandic-tinged lyrics vying for position with beatbox rhythms and international choirs. UK beatboxer Shlomo is also on board, while Rahzel (of US hip-hop giants The Roots) is rumoured be providing ‘basslines’ for a proportion of ‘Medulla’s 14 tracks.

The album is also set to feature Icelandic and London choirs, Inuit throat-singer Tanya Tagaq, and Mike Patton (former vocalist with Mr. Bungle and Faith No More), as well as Múm's Valgeir Sigurdsson and Jake Davies whose previous production credits include Madonna, William Orbit, and Björk herself.

The tracklisting is as follows:

  1. ‘Pleasure Is All Mine’
  2. ‘Show Me forgiveness’
  3. ‘Where Is the Line?’
  4. ‘Vokuro’
  5. ‘Öll Birtan’
  6. ‘Who Is It (Carry My Joy on the Left, Carry My Pain on the Right)’
  7. ‘Submarine’
  8. ‘Desired Constellation’
  9. ‘Oceania’
  10. ‘Sonnets/Unrealities XI’
  11. ‘Piano II’
  12. ‘Mouths Cradle’
  13. ‘Wednesday (Midvikudags)’
  14. ‘Triumph of a Heart’
