Air on 'Talkie Walkie'

added 23 January 2004 at 12.42

The Gallic kings of lush electronica - Jean-Benoit Dunkel and Nikolas Godin, a.k.a Air - talked John Kennedy through their latest synth-laden masterpiece, track-by-track.

'Talkie-Walkie' has been hailed as a return to the groundbreaking form that first bought Air forth from the often introspective French scene with their awesome debut 'Moon Safari'. Now one of the few French acts with an international following, this week they release their eagerly awaited new long player. Get the storybehind every single track from the duo themselves, right here.

'Venus'
"The feelings that we wanted to get were the same as when you are in a bed with a girl and you like the smell of the girl 'cos she's pretty." [listen]

'Cherry Blossom Girl'
"It's about naive feelings when you're a teenager and you're in love with a girl but she don't care about you she just cares about older men who've got a car..." [listen]

'Run'
"We try just to be aware of what is good; for example we like the very good last OutKast album, we like some bands like Queens of the Stone Age - we like a lot of things, even music for the children..." [listen]

'Universal Traveller'
"We were doing the string arrangements with Michael Granmiere, and he told us that he feels at home anywhere; he can work in New York, in his hotel room. For us it was a big crazy wisdom - I'd like to achieve that in my life." [listen]

'Mike Mills'
"Mike Mills is the guy who did all our videos and our cover for 'Moon Safari'. He planned to do a movie so we were going to compose the theme, but he didn't find the money so we put this on the record not to be lost." [listen]

'Surfin' On A Rocket'
"You never know when the inspiration was born - you have an idea and you think you just had it but it's coming from very far away, and you will never guess why you had that idea." [listen]

'Another Day'
"It's a really, really depressing song, we are very sorry. It's horrible, it's so depressing. It's all about getting old every day and we can't help it. It's a horrible song." [listen]

'Alpha, Beta, Ga Ga'
"It's a very simple song, took us about three hours to make. It's like pure inspiration, instant karma this song. You just write it and it's like that and you can't help it." [listen]

'Biological'
"We wanted to analyse love as chemistry, as if I was a scientist. It is just to do with the physical reaction that happens when two people kiss each other. And that is biological." [listen]

'Alone In Kyoto'
"It was not supposed to be on the album, but when we mixed it Nigel Godrich said, 'You know what? This is just the best song to finish the album!'..." [listen]
