X-clusive: Travis Live To Fight Another Day

added 06 October 2003 at 14.18

On the eve of the release of their new album ’12 Memories’ Travis frontman Fran Healy has spoken exclusively to Xfm about how becoming disillusioned with the music industry drove the band dangerously close to splitting up last year.

’12 Memories’ marks Travis' return to the music industry after taking time out when their drummer Neil Primrose damaged his spine after being knocked unconscious in a swimming pool accident in France and in July last year.

However, it seemed the accident was the best thing that could happen as the group were close to splitting up.

“It taught us a lesson really,” Healy explained, “When it happened we were ready to pack it all in really. The success of ‘The Man Who’ and ‘The Invisible Band’ was fantastic, we got to see the world, but there’s a tendency with the music business, cos they very rarely strike oil – they just get trickles – when they strike it big they’ll drill you until you’ve got nothing left.”

“And in the end we couldn’t look at each other like we were mates – it was always like work, always leaving home. And we were thinking ‘Is this worth it?’

“Then all this happened to Neil and we jettisoned all the business, and all we were left with was just us again. And now it’s been the most amazing year ever. It’s great to be here. We got it back again.”

'12 Memories' is released on October 13 on Independiente Records.
