X-clusive: Starsailor on The Stones and Spector

Talking to Zoë Ball on her show, Starsailor revealed the truth about working with distinguished producer Phil Spector and just how painful a process it was.
The band's new album 'Silence Is Easy' features two tracks which were produced by the American Wall of Sound veteran. Discussing the recording process, frontman James Walsh explained why they limited their work with Spector to just two tracks.
"It was always our original plan to do it ourselves. I just think when you have the opportunity to work with a legend you have to accommodate him in some respects, it's just a few songs that don't really sound like Phil Spector songs to me."
The band's bassist James Stelfox confessed that at times he became so frustrated with Spector, who is notoriously hard to work with, that he used to play his guitar with his penis just to get his attention. Sadly the bassist didn't reveal if any of the takes made it onto the album.
In response to those who doubt the band, Walsh explained how 'Sharkfood' came about.
"It's just like The Verve, Richard Ashcroft, everytime he makes music he puts his heart and his soul into it and sometimes it's rapturously received like Urban Hymns and Northern soul and sometimes the critics are less kind, like with his solo work. You can never tell."
After supporting the Rolling Stones at Twickenham, where they revealed they didn't actually get to meet the ageing rockers, Starsailor will be hitting the road to promote their sophomore album. Stay tuned to find out how you can win a pair of tickets to their Brixton Academy gig.
