Walkway This Way - Run DMC Street

A new petition submitted by New York's Hip Hop Summit Youth Council to local councillors is attempting to rename a street in Hollis, Queens after murdered Run DMC DJ, Jam Master Jay.

The petition was circulated by the NY-based hip-hop Summit Youth Council in an attempt to re-christened the street where the murdered DJ and production legend was born, Jam Master Jay Street.

However, while the group's plans were to change the street name in time for the October 30 anniversary of the hip hop star's death, there are claims Community Board officials didn't review the petition in time and now won't be able to act before September after a summer recess - and have received much criticism from some locals.

"It would be a travesty of justice if the street naming of Jam Master Jay is not approved by the anniversary of his death." said Charles Fisher, founder and chairman of the Hip Hop Summit Youth Council, "It is my hope that all parties can come together to resolve this issue."

Unfortunately there seems to be an underlying political agenda to the story, as there is speculation that renaming was being delayed because of the politics involved over a race for a seat on the Jamaica, NY City Council as one of the candidates for the seat is a Hip Hop Summit Youth Council board member while another is from the Community Board itself.

Jam Master Jay (real name Jason Mizell) was shot dead by an unidentified assailant last October. A police probe into the murder continues but no charges have been filed in the case as yet.
