The Offspring Go Atomic

added 07 October 2003 at 14.50

Middle aged proto-nu metallers The Offspring have named the replacement for their departed drummer Ron Welty, who parted company with the band earlier this year, as Atom Willard. They’ve also announced details of their new album.

The wonderfully named Atom Willard is better known as drummer for Rocket From The Crypt and has also played with Alkaline Trio, Moth and ex-Courtney Love cohort, Melissa Auf Der Maur.

After Welty’s departure, Josh Freese (known for his work with The Vandals, A Perfect Circle and Axl Rose’s Mark II Guns ‘n’ Roses) had taken drum duties, though he was never confirmed as an official replacement. Welty will now concentrate on his new project, Steady Ground.

Willard will begin touring with the band this autumn as they head out on the road to support the new album ‘Splinter’ which is due for a December 2 release. This follows the announcement that the album would be titled ‘Chinese Democracy (You Snooze You Lose)’, ridiculing Axl Rose’s overrunning album recording sessions. The title was, however, changed as singer Dexter claimed that the “album title jinxed us”. Nothing to do with a cease and desist letter from Axl Rose’s lawyers then…

The band's seventh studio album is the follow up to 2001’s platinum  ‘Conspiracy Of One’ and is  and has been produced by acclaimed Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Korn and Rage Against the Machine knob botherer Brendan O’Brien.

The first single taken from the album will be ‘Hit That’ which is expected in stores late November.
