Tenacious D Taken Away In Ambulance

added 07 November 2003 at 12.28

As previously reported Tenacious D were to celebrate the release of their new DVD ‘The Complete Masterworks’ by mimicking David Blaine and imprisoning themselves in a perspex box for a month, but things went a tad awry.

The D’s Jack Black and Kyle Gass planned to stage a 45-day hunger strike while in a seven-foot by three-foot by seven-foot glass box 50 yards above Times Square in New York. Amazingly enough, the duo did go thorough with their promise, however, according to witnesses, things went a little wrong.

Black and Gass were calm at first in the clear glass box, but after only about 20 minutes, Black “began to panic over nothing whatsoever” and Gass began to “shove large quantities of M&Ms in his mouth,” which were stashed in his costume.

The box had to be lowered and the two were put into an ambulance and led away.  Soon afterwards, they appeared on MTV’s ‘Total Request Live’, where they were described as “freaky” and “disoriented” as they were brought out in wheelchairs.

As reported by Xfm the dynamic duo appeared in the seven foot box together in the middle of NYC on Monday, dressed in silver superhero spandex costumes (very Darkness-esque ). They vowed to take only water and not to eat for 45 days in order to outdo Blaine’s London stunt.

Black told Billboard that they would only come down earlier a) if their DVD went platinum (sold 500,000 copies), b) world hunger is solved or c) if there was peace in the Middle East. True to their rock and roll righteousness, they took with them only a single guitar.

Their new DVD ‘The Complete Masterworks’ went on sale in the U.S. on Tuesday (November 4).  It features live performances from a year ago at “The legendary and epic recital at London's Brixton Academy that was by chance recorded,” the band announced.  The duo also said the DVD contains their early HBO episodes and “Never before seen footage of The D as they perform their secret backstage rituals.”

David Blaine recently spent 44 days in a box over the Thames without food and only small amounts of water.  Last year, he appeared in New York’s Bryant Park where he stood on a three-foot pole for a few weeks.
