No Knees Up For Linkin Park

added 25 September 2003 at 14.45

Linkin Park have been allowed to play a rare gig in Malaysia next month (a country renowned for its draconian regulations regarding western entertainers) but the group are being forced to comply with certain rules.

Few bands play the country, which has a history of censoring movies and banning musicians, but the government has allowed Linkin Park to play a gig – no doubt impressed by the American metal mob’s reputation for avoiding drugs and alcohol, and for not using too much bad language in their songs.

However the government has imposed strict conditions for the concert. The band must cover their bodies from chest to knee level (so no shorts on stage) and they mustn’t display “rough, raunchy actions that conflict with pure values” such as leaping around, screaming or throwing anything from the stage into the audience.

Many other artists have fallen foul of the country’s rules in the past. Michael Jackson was refused a performance as his dancing was considered “too sexy” and recently the government moved against local heavy metal bands who were accused of promoting devil worship.

In fact, in August religious authorities in the town of Kota Baru recently decided punks were un-Islamic and shaved off a fan’s Mohican hairdo as an example to others.
