Marilyn Manson Gig Ends In Riots
A performance by Marilyn Manson in the US last week was halted after fears for fan safety following the collapse of a crowd barrier, causing many of the 12,000 strong to riot, resulting in six injuries and nine detentions by riot police.
The gig was planned to take place in Kansas City International Raceway in Kansas City, Missouri, last Thursday (October 30), but Manson only got two songs into his set before the safety barrier at the front of the stage broke.
Security then repaired the barrier, but Manson only played one more song before it broke again and at around 10.00pm the promoter cancelled the concert.
A statement from Manson reads;
"Even though the show was stopped twice for safety reasons, we wanted nothing more than to continue to play. Although we were not allowed to finish the show, we understand that safety needs to come first."
While many of the attendant fans left the venue, police reports state that numerous fights erupted, then around 2,000 to 3,000 people began rioting in front of the stage. The venues in-house security couldn’t contain the mob and called in the Kansas City police, who sent 130 officers in full riot gear.
The police tried to disperse the crowd with some success, though MTV reports groups of fans started throwing rocks, beer bottles and bottles filled with urine at the officers, who responded by firing pepper spray.
In the end after the venue was cleared, it was an away win for the police. Only one officer was injured (a busted finger) and nine police cars were damaged, but a more impressive six fans suffered minor injuries, nine were taken into custody (and later released) and one was arrested for “trying to hit a traffic officer with his car”.
