January 5 - Alpinestars

Named after a mountain bike and influenced by New Order and Depeche Mode, Alpinestars are the band who just might forge the long-awaited seamless marriage of dance and rock.

Alpinestars 'Xfm Session' [Dial-Up] [Broadband]

Richard Woolgar and Gly Thomas know that combining dance and rock isn't simply a case of using instruments from both genres. No, a more radical rethink is required. The attitude needs to be imported along with the sounds. Alpinestars perhaps come as close to this as anyone with their Brian Molko-voiced crossover hit 'Carbon Kid' [Dial-Up] [Broadband] which, coincidentally, kicked off their Xfm studio session.

Similarly, 'Smash It Up' [Dial-Up] [Broadband] could be best described as - gulp - techno-punk while set closer 'Burning Up' [Dial-Up] [Broadband] marries some AOR sentiment to a more sedate set of beats.
