Here Today, Zwan Tomorrow

It’s not exactly a surprise following the departure of bassist Paz Lenchantin and rumours of increasing tensions within the band, but Billy Corgan’s post Smashing Pumpkins outfit Zwan have split.
Corgan formed the band after the December 2000 breakup of the Pumpkins, but it now seems that their January 2003 debut album ‘Mary Star Of The Sea’ will be their last.
"I think my heart was in Smashing Pumpkins," Corgan told a Chicago news agency, this morning (September 16) I think it was naive of me to think that I could find something that would mean as much to me.”
At the heart of the split are rumoured tensions between Corgan (a notoriously ‘difficult’ artist) guitarists Matt Sweeney and David Pajo, and bassist Paz Lenchantin. In fact, Lenchantin pre-empted the split in early August when she left Zwan to dedicate more time to Pajo's side project Papa M (something aluded to by Corgan in the interview).
“I enjoyed my experience in Zwan, but at the end of the day, without that sense of deeper family and loyalty, it becomes like anything else.” He explained, "In some cases I felt that the band members viewed it as something they could decide to do or not to do."
Zwan had previous existed in many other incarnations which vaguely differing line-ups (including The True Poets Of Zwan) one of which - Djali Zwan - an acoustic version of Zwan, was set to release a film and DVD in 2004. We can presume this won’t be happening now.
Now the group has disbanded Corgan plans to work on solo material, but is also presenting some of his poetry at the thirty-first annual Reading Series for the Poetry Center of Chicago.
