Green Day Release Secret Album?

added 02 October 2003 at 11.27

While things have been quiet for US punksters Green Day of late, there are rumours that Billie Joe Armstrong's outfit have recorded and are releasing a whole new album under a pseudonym.

There have been reports that the band have been in the studio recently, but there has been no sign of any new material since 2000’s album ‘Warning’.

However a mysterious new band has appeared on Armstrong's Adeline Record label called The Network. They never show their faces to cameras or in public - only appearing in masks - and thier debut album ‘Money Money 2020’ sounds remarkably like Green Day themselves.

On their website, the band are described as “A synthesis of pop and sarcastic social commentary in an electronic new-wave post-punk experience in sound and fury with strong robotic and mechanical overtones. Their new-wave futuristic chaos gives nods to the likes of Adam & The Ants, Devo, Public Image Ltd. and Peter Murphy.

“The members hail from all corners of the world and were brought together by an ancient prophecy, which predicted their rise to world power and eventually their demise".

Not surprisingly all the band members have ridiculous names; Fink (“finances the group using money he made on a "top secret" nuclear invention”) Van Gough (“a macrobiotic/vegan from Belgium”) The Snoo (“formally a Mexican wrestler from Argentina”) Captain Underpants (“he speaks seven languages and all with a slight stutter”) and Z (“an Icelandic sculptor”).

The album (only available online) also comes with a DVD which includes 6 full-length music videos, something unheard of for the debut release by an unheard, unknown, unsigned band on an indie label.
