According to www.elliottsmith.com and reports on various US radio stations, American singer/songwriter Elliott Smith died yesterday, October 21. He was 34. The official cause of death has not yet been announced.
Born Steven Paul Smith on August 6, 1969 in Nebraska, Smith spent his early childhood in Texas where he started playing music at the age of nine, winning various awards by the time he was ten. During his college days in Massachusetts he co-founded Stranger Than Fiction and later became a member of successful fourpiece Heatmiser.
Around this time, Smith also started to release his own material and managed to establish himself as a talented solo-artist, recording five full-length albums. At the time of his death he was working on a sixth, provisionally titled 'From A Basement On The Hill'.
