Dizzee Rascal Meets Lauren Laverne

added 26 November 2003 at 14.43

Mercury Music Prize winner from the cutting edge of street level urban UK hip-hop, Dizzee Rascal visited the studios to chat with Lauren Laverne and deliver a modified live version of forthcoming single 'Just A Rascal'

Since coming out of (almost) nowhere to win the Mercury Music Prize against some very stiff competition with the unique, critically acclaimed debut album 'Boy In Da Corner', Dizzee Rascal - a.k.a Dylan Mills - has been living up to his name.

On the day that David Blaine was due to be released from his box above the Thames, Dizzee and his people hired a boat and motored up and down, new single 'Just A Rascal' blaring out at a bemused Blaine.

Now with that selfsame single released this week, Dizzee turned to a more conventional form of self-promotion with a visit to Lauren Laverne in the Xfm studios.

On supporting Justin Timberlake and winning the Mercury Music Prize
"Justin Timberlike's alright, that'd be alright - he's got a couple of girls to his name ain't he? He's heavy, he does his thing." [listen]

On Christmas
"I dunno yet. Christmas - it's far away. Even though it's not long away..." [listen]

Dizzee Rascal 'Just A Rascal' [Dial-Up] [Broadband]
An inch perfect version of what's already Dizzee's instantly recognisable signature tune. There's no macho posturing here, gangsta rap's aggressive brawn replaced with a bewildering vocal dexterity that at time verges on the falsetto. Plus a nice set of namechecks for hosts Xfm, naturally.
