Levi’s Ones To Watch

added 29 August 2008 at 11.17

Presenting the latest crop of hotly-tipped musical talent. This lot all played at the recent Levi's OnesToWatch 5 Night Revue, get all the details right here.

Bombay Bicycle Club
They were at the forefront of last year’s underage scene and last summer Bombay Bicycle Club raised their profile even more, playing a string of festivals including T in the Park, Reading and Leeds. Their angular sound is a mixture between The Macabees, The Editors and The Strokes, but revved up with the confidence and gusto of musicians twice their age. Bombay Bicycle Club recently released new single ‘Evening/Morning’ on hip London label Young & Lost Club.

Iglu & Hartley
Take the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Flaming Lips, with a little Beastie Boys thrown in and you can begin to imagine Iglu & Hartley’s unique brand of heavy synth, rap and explosive hooks. After a stomping performance at this year’s South By South West festival in Texas and a recent sell out UK tour, the duo release their debut album “& then boom” this month.

Esser
23-year-old Essex boy Esser was brought up on the UK garage scene, but is now reinventing trashy glam rock like a young, lap-top packing Brian Eno. His off-kilter loops and vocal samples - pulled together with dry Essex observations - have already earned him support slots with the likes of Foals and the Mystery Jets and his debut album is due for release soon on Transgressive records.

Micachu
East London composer, DJ, and songwriter Micachu is one of London’s most interesting young musicians.  Signed to Accidental records, she is currently composing a piece for the London Philharmonic - when she’s not making her own instruments out of hoovers that is. Catch her now, before she hits the big time.

Broken Records
Edinburgh band Broken Records make rowdy, contemporary folk with a fervent nod to Nick Cave, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash. Their staple is rousing trumpet, fiddle, cello, guitar and drums, which can be heard on new single, Slow Parade, (Fandango). 2007 was a busy year for the band, with numerous live sessions as well as a performance at T in the Park and a support show with Idlewild.

Metronomy
After DJ, producer, Trash founder and electro-punk avatar Erol Alkan began to feature single ‘You Could Easily Have Me’ in his sets, Metronomy’s frontman Joe decided to embark on a series of prestigious remixes himself, for the likes of Klaxons, Franz Ferdinand, Gorillaz and Kate Nash. Metronomy’s brand new album ‘Nights Out’ is due to be released at long last this month on Because Music. Think early 80s bands such as Brian Eno, Talking Heads and Soft Cell.

Tubelord
Tubelord have a jerky and melodic sound similar to OnesToWatch favourites, Johnny Foreigner.  The three piece turned heads this year with the release of single ‘Feed Me A Box of Words’ on Big Scary Monsters, followed by ‘Night of the Pencils’. They will release their new single I Am Azerrad on 29th September on limited edition 7” each of which comes with its own unique artwork.

Skylarkin

Recently signed to Wichita Recordings, home to Bloc Party, The Cribs, Simian Mobile Disco, and Los Campesinos!  Leeds based band, Skylarkin will be heading out to support Conor Oberst in Europe this autumn. This will be followed by In The City in Manchester, Popkomm (Berlin) and a support tour with Hot Club de Paris. Their first single 'Fossil, I' is released in the UK on October 13th.
