J. Mascis and his slacker grunge pioneers released their fifth album in '93, which featured the hit Start Choppin'.

March: Suede - Suede
Alongside Modern Life Is Rubbish, the first seeds of Britpop were sowed here with the release of Brett Anderson and co's debut. It included The Drowners, Animal Nitrate, So Young and Metal Mickey.

March: Frank Black - Frank Black
The man formerly known as Black Francis made his first post-Pixies album, under a new moniker. The LP included a cover of one of The Beach Boys' lesser-known songs, Hang On To Your Ego.

March: Depeche Mode - Songs Of Faith And Devotion
The Basildon electro-rockers released their eighth album, which included I Feel You, Condemnation and Walking In My Shoes. A live version of the LP was released in December of 1993.

April: Sugar - Beaster
Bob Mould's post-Husker Du trio released this EP as a follow-up to the acclaimed Copper Blue at Easter, 1993.

April: The Spin Doctors - Two Princes
Despite being taken from the band's 1991 album, Pocketful Of Kryptonite, Two Princes became a hit in the UK two years later.

May: PJ Harvey - Rid Of Me
Peej released her second album which included 50ft Queenie and Legs.

May: New Order - Republic
The legendary Manchester band released their sixth album - and their last for eight years - in 1993, which featured Regret, Spooky, World and Ruined In A Day.

May: Slowdive - Souvlaki
The sun may have been setting on shoegaze, but Slowdive released their best album in May 1993, which featured a guest appearance from Brian Eno.

May: Blur - Modern Life Is Rubbish
Britpop began here! After the lukewarm critical response to their debut album Leisure, the band returned with a new sound that embraced classic British music and themes. Hits included For Tomorrow, Chemical World and Sunday Sunday.

June: Manic Street Preachers - Gold Against The Soul
The Welsh wonders released their second album, which included the tracks La Tristesse Durera (Scream To A Sigh) and From Despair To Where.

June: Soul Asylum - Runaway Train
Taken from the 1992 album Grave Dancer's Union, this was a huge hit in the UK in the summer of '93 and highlighted the plight of runaway kids around the world.

June: Verve - A Storm In Heaven
Verve (no "The" in those days, it was before the legal action from the jazz label of the same name) released their debut album, which featured Slide Away and Blue.

July: Bjork - Debut
The former Sugarcubes singer issued her, well, debut album this year - big hits from the LP included Human Behaviour, Venus As A Boy and Big Time Sensuality.

July: Cypress Hill - Black Sunday
The hip hop collective released their second album, which included the classic Insane In The Brain.

July: Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
Billy Corgan hit the big time with the Pumpkins' second album, which featured the classics Today, Disarm, Rocket and Cherub Rock.

July: U2 - Zooropa
Bono and co released this mini-album in the midst of the mammoth Zoo TV Tour and included The Edge on a rare vocal on the track Numb.

August: Orbital - Orbital
Aka The Brown Album, which was the Hartnoll brothers' second LP and included the excellent Halcyon + On + On

The cult indie electronica outfit released their major-label debut in 1993.

The Liverpool band's ground-breaking third album featured Wish I Was Skinny, Barney (And Me) and Lazarus.

August: The Breeders - Last Splash
Following the split of the Pixies, Kim Deal's supergroup made a second album, which featured her twin sister Kelley for the first time. The big hit from the LP was Cannonball.

September: Nirvana - In Utero
The third and final studio album from Nirvana was recorded with alternative rock legend Steve Albini. Tracks included Heart Shaped Box, Pennyroyal Tea and All Apologies.

The Modfather released his second solo album, which included the great title track and the stunning opener, Sunflower.

The Canadian band released their second album, which featured the monster hit Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm.

Stuart Staples and his cult band released their debut album, which featured the singles Patchwork and Marbles.

November: Leftfield/Lydon - Open Up
The dance duo's collaboration with former Sex Pistol John Lydon was first released in 1993 and later ended up on their debut album, Leftism, in 1995.
